Boiler Problems to be Aware of

Boilers have a well-earned reputation for being resistant to problems. This is because they have fewer moving parts than the standard heating system, presenting fewer opportunities for things to break down. However, that doesn’t mean that boilers are completely immune to issues. They do develop problems, even if it doesn’t happen as often. It’s important that you be able to recognize that your boiler is having issues, so that you call for repairs as soon as possible.

Kettling

If your boiler is making a deep rumbling sound while it’s operating, it’s probably kettling. Kettling is the result of water becoming trapped in the heat exchanger, usually as a result of lime scale buildup. This causes the water to evaporate, resulting in a substantial increase in pressure on the system. This causes the heat exchanger to rumble. If the problem is not dealt with, the continued pressure will eventually cause the heat exchanger to rupture.

Leaks

It’s never a good idea to ignore leaks in a hydronic system, especially with boilers. Even small leaks can eventually grow into larger ones, causing increasingly problematic situations up to and including a full system breakdown. Make sure that you call for repairs if you notice a leak, even if it seems to be a very small leak, just to make sure that further damage isn’t done.

Burner Assembly Issues

The burner assembly is the method by which gas boilers heat their water supplies. If the assembly begins to malfunction, it will cause the output of the system to drop significantly. If your burner assembly appears to be malfunctioning, call for repairs to restore full output.
