Icy AC? Reach Out For Repairs!

If you’ve ever walked through a fair exhibit full of ice sculptures on a hot day, you probably know how pleasant that cool air is. With that said, ice belongs in ice sculptures, not in your air conditioner. And no, icy build-up doesn’t mean that your AC unit is working overtime.

If you’ve started to see ice on your air conditioner’s components then it is time to reach out for an AC repair in Frederick, MD. Curious how ice could be an indicator of a malfunctioning system? Let us give you the info you need to help you stay comfortable this summer.

Your AC Is Iced Over But Your House Is Hot

It seems contradictory, doesn’t it? When you check out your air conditioner you can see a buildup of ice inside of it. At the same time though your home is uncomfortably hot as if the AC is not running at all. How can things be this hot indoors if your AC is that cold?

Here’s the thing: an icy AC is a sign that your system isn’t working properly! The transfer of heat isn’t happening the way it should which is hindering your home comfort while causing your system to get far too cold.

What Causes Your AC to Ice Over?

So what exactly causes this chilly issue? There is more than one problem that can cause it. Here’s a quick overview of what might be going wrong with your air conditioner:

  • The air filter is overly clogged. If your air filter has too much dirt and debris in it, this will halt to flow of air into your system. If you can’t get enough air into your AC, it won’t be able to absorb heat the way it is meant to, causing it to essentially freeze itself.
  • The evaporator coil is extremely dirty. Over time your evaporator coil can collect a large amount of dirt. If it isn’t properly cleaned, this can hinder your AC’s ability to absorb heat and lead to the coil collecting layer of ice on itself.
  • There is a refrigerant leak. Last but not least, a refrigerant leak is likely to cause major trouble for your air conditioner. If there isn’t enough refrigerant in your system to allow it to perform the usual level of heat absorption, it can cause that build-up of ice!

What Can You Do?

If your air conditioner is struggling to the point that it is creating a buildup of ice then your best option is to schedule a repair provided by a professional technician. Resist the urge to go into your system with an ice scraper and take care of things yourself. You are far more likely to cause additional damage to the evaporator coil rather than fixing the problem. The best course of action you can take is to turn off your AC and reach out to our team for help.
