But, wait, your air filter needs work? If you didn’t know that your HVAC system’s air filter played a huge role in the ability to cool your home, we would love to fill you in–and help you keep it in working condition.

What Does Your Air Filter Do?

When we discuss your air filter in this case we are actually talking about the air filter that is in your return air duct. This filter is made to help protect the internal workings of your AC system rather than filtering the air that enters your home.

When You Run Into Problems With Your Air Filter

An air filter can run into issues over time. The thing is that when your air filter starts to struggle, it is going to impact the rest of your air conditioning system. See, the state of your air filter is going to determine things like airflow and air quality which, in turn, will impact your comfort levels.

Let’s take a moment to break down some of the issues that a damaged or dirty air filter can create:

  • Reduced airflow: If your air filter is too strong or overly clogged with debris, it has the ability to hinder the strength of the airflow entering your air conditioner. This means that it can lead to an overall reduction in the strength of the air flowing into your home and can cause other problems like an iced-over evaporator coil.
  • Dirty air: If the air filter for your AC system is full of dirt and debris there is a strong chance that some of that stuff can wiggle through and pass through your ductwork. This can create dirty air flowing into your home.
  • Problematic noises: A clogged filter is going to let you know when something is up because in some cases it will create a whistling noise while air forces its way past the debris.

What To Do With a Problematic Air Filter

If something has gone wrong with your AC air filter, it is going to be an issue that you want to resolve sooner than later. We actually advise that air filters be changed every one to three months depending on how much use your system is getting. If you have a reusable air filter, make sure to clean it according to the directions and, if it is a disposable filter, take note of the specific strength and size of the filter so you get the right one from the store. If you aren’t sure about changing your filter on your own, or even how to check it, you can turn to us for help.
