How to Tell if You Need Drain Cleaning

Drains are important parts of your plumbing system. They serve as the connection point between you and your sewer system, allowing you to dispose of waste water in a quick and sanitary fashion. Despite their importance, however, drains are often neglected by homeowners until they clog up. You shouldn’t wait until your drains clog to get them the professional attention they need, though. Read on for a number of early signs that you need drain cleaning.

Bad Smells

There are a lot of different things that could cause bad smells to rise out of your drains. The most common tends to occur in kitchen drains, where FOG gets caught in the pipes. FOG stands for Fats, Oils and Grease. These are often poured down the drain after being used in cooking, when they are still in their liquid form. Once they cool, however, they solidify and stick to the drain pipe. This FOG buildup can cause bad smells to rise up out of your drain. Professional drain cleaning should solve the problem.

Slow Drainage

Drain clogs form when waste material sticks to the inner walls of the pipe and builds towards the center. It is typically a slow process, with the flow of water through the pipe becoming more and more restricted as the clog gets larger. Eventually, the flow is blocked completely. If you notice that your drain is draining more slowly than it normally does, there’s a good chance that a clog is in the process of forming. If you get your drains cleaned before the clog can form completely, you could save yourself some time and money.
