The Advantages of Installing a Geothermal Heating System

There are a great many different heating systems available on the market today, each of which has a different set of advantages to offer. If you’re looking for a new home heating system this winter, it’s important that you consider all of the various heating systems and how they might help you. Let’s go over how geothermal heating systems work, and the advantages that they can offer you.

Geothermal Heating

Geothermal heating systems are designed to draw heat from underground in order to heat your home. They do this by way of a pipe loop filled with water, which is buried 15+ feet underground. At that depth, the temperature that deep underground remains around 55-60 degrees Fahrenheit, regardless of the weather outside. This provides a practically infinite supply of thermal energy for the system to use. Geothermal systems are heat pumps, which means that they can offer cooling as well as heating functions.

Advantages

A geothermal system has all the advantages of an air-source heat pump. It is more efficient than most standard heating systems, as it doesn’t need to burn fuel to generate heat. The ability to act as both a heater and air conditioner saves a lot of money and space. What really makes geothermal systems unique, though, is what makes them different from air-source heat pumps. An air source heat pump relies on the air around it in order to gather thermal energy. As the temperature of the air outside drops, there is less thermal energy available for the system to use. A geothermal system doesn’t rely on the outside air, and so it is not affected by weather.
