When is it Beneficial to Install a Sump Pump?

Many people mistakenly think that the only kind of flooding to worry about is the kind that submerges a home in several feet of water. While that is certainly catastrophic, there are far more common and forms of flooding to worry about. The most common type of flooding, and the kind you’re most likely to run into, is when a basement or crawlspace floods during heavy rain. If you have an area of your home that you know to be more vulnerable to flooding, don’t just leave it be! Consider installing a sump pump to protect it.

How Sump Pumps Work

A sump pump is a device designed to prevent a single area from sustaining water damage due to moderate flooding. It will not protect against massive flooding, of the house-submerging variety, but it can still save you quite a bit of money on repair costs.

Sump pump installation starts by digging a sump at the lowest point in the area. A sump is just a pit used to collect all water that flows into the area. As the water enters the room, it will flow downhill into the sump. Once the sump is dug, the sump pump is installed wither in it or directly above it. A pipe extends from the sump pump and out of the home. Once the water level in the sump rises high enough, the sump pump will activate and pump the collected water out of the house through the pipe.

Advantages of Sump Pumps

Even a small amount of water, when put in the wrong place, can cause an immense amount of damage to the room if it is not dealt with as soon as possible. If you’ve ever had to pay for water damage remediation on a larger scale, you know what we mean. If you want to protect your home from water damage from flooding, installing a sump pump is a great way to do it.
