Why Installing a Sump Pump is a Good Idea

Flooding is a pretty common occurrence around here, even if it’s rarely of the full-home-submersion variety. If you’ve ever had a basement or crawlspace flood during a storm, then you know how incredibly damaging it can be. Even moderate amounts of water damage can cost thousands of dollars to repair, which is why it’s worth taking steps to protect flood-prone areas. Read on to find out more about sump pumps, and how they can benefit your home.

What is a Sump Pump?

A sump pump is a device designed to prevent an area from flooding by removing water as soon as it flows into it. A small pit is dug at the lowest point of an area, so that all water flowing into the area will naturally flow into the pit. This is called the sump. The sump pump is then installed either in or directly above the sump, with pipes running from it out of the house. When the water level in the sump rises to a certain level, the sump pump will activate and pump the collected water out of the house.

Advantages of Sump Pump Installation

A sump pump will protect the area in which it is installed from the majority of light-to-moderate flooding risks. If there’s a major flood, a sump pump will not be enough to prevent your home from flooding. Of course, you have bigger things to worry about if that happens in any case. A sump pump can save you thousands of dollars in prevented repair needs over the years, something that is very much worth the investment.
