Why You Should Schedule Backflow Maintenance

Backflow is a serious problem that can affect practically every home in the country under the wrong circumstances. It’s so common that most cities have mandated that all homes have a backflow prevention device. Chances are that you have one installed in your home right now, whether you know it or not. Backflow prevention devices can’t just be forgotten once they’re installed, though. Read on to find out more about backflow maintenance, and why you need to schedule it at least once a year.

Backflow Prevention Devices

There are a number of different backflow prevention devices on the market today, but the most common type is a relatively simple one-way valve. This is installed into the sewer line, and remains open as long as water continues to run in the right direction. As soon as backflow occurs, the valve snaps shut and prevents any sewer water from contaminating the home.

Though simple, this design is quite effective at protecting the home from backflow. However, over time waste can build up around the valve in the prevention device. If not cleaned out on a regular basis, the valve can become stuck in the open position. This is where the problems start.

If the backflow prevention device is stuck open, your home will be completely unprotected from backflow contamination. Once the sewer water from the backflow contaminates the plumbing pipes in your home, you will be unable to use them until they can be completely cleaned out. It’s vital that you schedule backflow maintenance procedures at least once a year, to make sure that your backflow prevention device continues to function properly.
