My Experience with Tuckers

Review of Tuckers Air Conditioning, Heating & Plumbing

Years ago, we replaced our home's original heating system with a boiler/air-handler system installed by United Air Temp. Over the years, however, I became disillusioned with UAT for several reasons. (1) The system they installed was so complex that we were dependent on UAT for even the smallest of problems. (2) Every time a UAT technician came to our house to fix something, he tried to sell us something else--usually something costing thousands of dollars. (3) UAT offered yearly service contracts for a few hundred dollars that in practice acted like a bribe: "In an emergency, our preferred customers will get expedited service, but for the rest of you, we'll get there when we get there." After years of paying and paying, and irritation at UAT's policies, I finally refused their service contract for 2019. Then our boiler malfunctioned, overflowing with scalding water into a sump pump and eventually destroying the pump (I barely got it stopped before it flooded the basement). So I called UAT. Because we didn't have a service contract that year, I was met with the "we'll get there when we get there" response. At that point, I had had enough. I emailed a contact we had at Case Design and asked him to recommend a company that could replace UAT. He recommended Tuckers. I have had Tuckers over three times so far to fix various things that have gone wrong with our heating system. The first time was for the above problem of the boiler overflowing with hot water. I didn't have to wait till "when we get there." They came promptly, fixed the problem, and performed other maintenance work for less cost than UAT would have charged for the boiler fix alone. The second time I called Tuckers was this fall when the heat in the back part of the house (the system has two parts, one servicing the front part of the house and the other the back part) quit working. It was getting chilly, and Tuckers showed up the next day. What the technician found was astounding. The electrical hookup was threaded from the power source to a switch--via a second, obsolete switch that apparently belonged to an earlier version of the heating system UAT had installed. It was this second switch that had gone bad. The Tuckers technician performed the simple operation of bypassing the bad switch and connecting the power source directly to the working switch. The third time I needed Tuckers' help was the most recent and the occasion for this review. The condensate pump on the air handler in the back part of the house wouldn't shut off. I called Tuckers, and once again they sent out a technician immediately. He discovered another astounding fact about the system UAT had installed. The air handler sits next to a sump pump. So condensation from the humidifier and the air handler was flowing into the condensate pump, which was then pumping the water into the sump pump. Why weren't the drips from the humidifier and air handler flowing directly into the sump pump, the technician wondered. Why indeed! So, once again, the Tuckers technician performed the simple task of removing a middleman (in this case, the condensate pump) and connecting the source directly to the target. These experiences have led to a few takeaways. (1) The system installed by UAT was needlessly complex. Both of the last two Tuckers visits revealed a similar problem: if you have a setup where A goes to B which goes to C, when you could have simply set up A to go to C directly, you have introduced a needless point of failure. I didn't realize that because I'm not a trained technician. But in both cases the Tuckers guy figured out in an instant. (2) Tuckers has no "preferred customer" aristocracy. If you call them with a problem, they will respond expeditiously. And the technician, when he arrives, is friendly, courteous, knowledgeable, and efficient. At least that's been my experience so far. I hope it continues well into the future.

Excellent service

Review of Tuckers Air Conditioning, Heating & Plumbing

Still am trying to figure out why we lost power, after learning the system did not fail. Not sure about the water condenser. However, I'm no technician!

Performed initial observation and check of system components for obvious leaks. Added refrigerant for bubble and electronic leak detection. Bubble tested all visible joints and connections, schrader valves and cores. Performed disassembly and electronic leak check of indoor and outdoor equipment. Could not locate a definitive leak, however, observed oil accumulation near external equalization line connection of indoor txv to suction line inside of air handler. This would not show up as a definite leak with bubbles or electronic detection. Tightened connection to ensure good seal.

Found emergency drain pan full of water and overflow safety switch tripped. Vacuumed out emergency drain pan. Cleared all drain tubing, drain trap, and condensate drain line. Found outdoor coil drain tubing clogged. In the heating season this would result in water backing up and leaking out of the unit.
